'we are stupid' mixed media on canvas
by naomi frears
i found frears’ work when i was having a flip through Toast’s autumn/winter mens catalog and they had used her studio in st ives as shoot location. her work is beautifully delicate, sensitive and composed whilst still possessing a feeling of strangeness and otherworldly concern. her work has been compared to that of peter doig.
'it is noticeable in these paintings that have the vivacity of drawings or prints, every character portrayed looks downwards, averting our gaze. in this way we do not read them as a portrait might be considered, but as the symbolic image for humanity and the peace or melancholia that occupies their thoughts.' - susan daniel-mcelroy director, tate st ives
